Description

This is the third generation of the Prius. Aiming to achieve both outstanding environmental performance and enjoyable driving at a higher level, it features the THS II system with motor speed reduction, a hybrid system of which 90% or more has been newly developed. In pursuit of an exterior design that contributes further to fuel-consumption performance, this model further advances the triangle silhouette, a symbol of the Prius's blending of aerodynamic performance with a comfortable interior, to achieve one of the world's best coefficients of drag, at 0.25. Together, these developments have achieved the world's best fuel performance at 38.0 km/l (fuel consumption when driving in 10/15 mode) and power equivalent to that of a 2.4-liter engine. This model combines advanced design with human warmth, to power the eco-car market as the eco icon of the next generation.

Designer's Thought

To complete an iconic design to serve as an indicator of the next generation of hybrids, by further advancing the image of the previous generation, this design thoroughly pursues aerodynamic characteristics from the triangle silhouette and the aerodynamic corners all the way through to the hubcaps. Furthermore, the wedge character line stretching from the front to the rear expresses an image of running that surpasses the previous hybrid concept.

Evaluation

The third-generation Prius has earned a surprising level of support from the market, for example by receiving a very large number of vehicle orders. Its energy-saving and ecological design, resulting in a revolutionary 38 kilometers per liter, is outstanding in the three-number class. Its new quiet, mild ride, befitting a refined hybrid, also can be evaluated highly. Features such as its interior ventilating system powered by solar panels installed on the roof also are regarded highly. The technological advancedness of hybrids has been recognized to lead to a similarity in styling, since their designs focus on aerodynamic characteristics. For this reason, further design advances are expected through progress in development of future hybrid vehicles.
