This public facility provides an information technology environment
organized within a new multimedia dimension that integrates the multiple
functions of an art gallery, the Sendai Municipal Library, a visual
image center, and an information center for people with visual and
hearing disabilities. The simple tubes, plates, and skin used as components
give the architectural structure its distinctive internal and external
appearance. A major aim of the structure is to create a space that
is free of the barriers found in conventional architecture, forming
an operational system in a space that eliminates not only physical
barriers but barriers in every sense. This design received positive
evaluations for the way it has gone beyond the framework of typical
public projects of the past by creating a new type of compound cultural
facility that nurtures new relationships of people to people, citizens
to government, and city to people. |
