Personal Computer / Panasonic CF-28
Applicant: Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd.
Designer: Matsushita Electric Industrial Co.,Ltd., AVC Company Design Group, Toshio Horiki

This personal computer offers true value in its sturdiness and security, which make it usable under harsh conditions that would render ordinary PCs inoperable. The magnesium alloy cabinet provides superior shock resistance, and the improved sealing guarantees dust resistance and moisture resistance on all sides. Furthermore, locks on the power switch and the hard disk drive cover allow the user to protect sensitive information in case the computer is stolen. This computer, the third generation after the original CF-25, incorporates a multitude of improvements based on feedback from users. The Screening Committee took special note of the way in which the company used these accumulated improvements to create a unique identity for this PC.

3 direction shock recorder / TG-301
Applicant: Art Haven 9 Co., Ltd. + hers experimental design laboratory inc.
Designer: hers experimental design laboratory inc. Chiaki Murata/ Jun Kimura

This shock and acceleration recorder contains a microsensor for acceleration. When precision instruments are sold, conditions during marketing, especially vibrations encountered during the distribution process, may affect their accuracy. However, this device measures and records both peak acceleration in the X, Y, and Z directions as well as combined acceleration along these three axes, allowing users to ascertain the vibration and shock that articles are subjected to during transport or in their installation environments. The base unit can be attached in several ways, making it applicable to a variety of uses. Introducing the principles of design to this product area is a relatively new concept, and accordingly, this recorder represents a break with previous images of commercial measuring devices. We liked the way in which the designer created an identity for the product that expressed its characteristic functionality in an honest and refined form.
