Good Design Award 2011 Message of the Chairman (Release May 2011)

On the launch of Good Design Award 2011

I wish to place my sincere sympathies to all the people who suffered by the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake.

After this unprecedented disaster, all of the people in Japan review their sense of value for the daily life, considering individual possible help, what is true wealth and what is true happiness.

The judgment of "good" or "bad" design has been defined according to the sense of value and the definition of the wealth of the time.
Nobody blames the current town darkness because of the save on electricity. We rather regret the too much brightness and are aware the reasonableness of the current lighting that is enough for daily life.
However, it doesn't work and not aesthetic if we just thin the surplus lights.
It only works when we accomplish the reasonable and aesthetic darkness, like the town lights in Scandinavian countries.

I think "design" is to seek the reasonableness. Design always balances in trial and error according to the aesthetic axis of "reasonableness".
And now, it might be the time to shift the traditional aesthetic axis greatly.
With this context, the criteria of the Good Design Award 2011 must be different than previous ones. Sustainability must be more essential. Obvious futility must be given up, saving wastes and including outlook for the future.
Furthermore, the wisdom to coexist with nature, not to suppress, will be truly appreciated.

Design still remains potential even in front of such helpless disaster.
We must not forget the value of the design, the power source to seek the reasonable solutions based upon the daily life.

Screening (Release May 2011)

Screening Policy

The screening policy of the Good Design Awards is briefly expressed in five important words summarizing the basic concept behind the screening process.
HUMANITY Inspiration for products and conceptual embodiments
HONESTY Perceptiveness toward contemporary society
INNOVATION  Concepts to pioneer the future
ESTHETICS Imagination for prosperous lifestyle culture
ETHICS: Reflecting on society and environment

These five words used in our principle can be expressed in a single phrase as "giving people the central role and taking a high ethical standard in identifying the essence of our lives and engaging in appealing creative endeavors". This illustrates our basic philosophy that design is a humanitarian act put in the service of the human community. This is also the message of the Judging Committee, which seeks to reward design meeting these standards.
In addition, creativity, insight, conceptual abilities, imagination and intellect are the skills that are so essential when putting good design into practice.
The entries are screened based on this philosophy and the characteristics of their respective domains.
Entries Deemed Impossible for Screening For reasons relating to inadequate screening capacity, the Judging Committee may determine certain entries impossible to screen. In these cases, the Organizer will so advise such applicants, and promptly return all screening fees deposited.
