Outline

GR-3 is a GPS receiver used by surveyors, civil engineers, and contractors to establish an exact position on earth down to one millimeter, by tracking up to 36 satellites from GPS (USA), Glonass (Russian), and Galileo (EU), simultaneously.

Designers Comment

Advanced GR-3 technology required: improved balance, reduced size and weight, to make it more handle-able, easier to use, more weather proof, and rugged.

Jury Comment

The GR-3 positioning system operates on 72 universal channels to track up to 36 satellites in American, European, or Russian systems for ultra-precise positioning within 1 mm. This level of precision is needed in a range of applications, including construction, surveying, and industrial facilities. The GR-3 is simple in design, but it took ingenuity to create a unit that is more portable than ever for use in a variety of positioning environments. Compact and lightweight, it measures 15x15x20 cm and weighs 1.5 kg. Protective molding and a rugged, square shape help prevent damage during rough transit. The hot-swappable battery system is convenient, and backlit controls with LED indicators facilitate operation at night. These and other aspects of the user interface are meticulously designed, which makes this unit attractive. [Shinichi Yamamura, A09 unit leader]
