The development of the stations on the Oedo Line of the Eidan Subway System was a far-reaching design project integrating work in civil engineering, architecture, art, signage, and publicity, all with an eye to creating a new identity for this particular line. A new approach was followed in order to make this happen: a designer was selected for each station from among those who had submitted proposals, and each designer was allowed to express his or her own individuality. This comprehensive production method, which transcends traditional boundaries, brought out the individual character of the neighborhood around each station and made the station itself into an enjoyable public space, pointing to a new focus for the development of transit lines. The Adjudication Committee saw this project as a milestone in linking the wisdom of the design world to large-scale government developments.
