While local industry at one time produced a great deal of Japanese architectural materials, production has gradual fallen off over time. Japanese roof tiles are beginning to disappear from city and regional landscapes, and local producers of these tiles find themselves struggling. Revitalizing the materials and techniques used for Awaji Island's oxidized tiles and employing them not as roof tiles, but in a variety of modern uses, has brought a new aesthetic to shopping areas and living spaces and revitalized this local industry. The designers were commended for introducing a new tile aesthetic to modern spaces and significantly contributing to the revival and revitalization of the tile industry.
